James acts as an adviser and advocate in disputes before courts and arbitral tribunals. His practice spans a wide variety of commercial disputes including shipping, banking, insurance, company disputes, judicial review and probate and trusts. He has substantial experience in handling a wide variety of interlocutory matters.

James commenced practice in London in 1983 and in Hong Kong from 1992.

James acts as arbitrator in international arbitrations and has dealt with complex cross border disputes and charter-parties.  He has acted on numerous occasions as an examiner of the High Court of Hong Kong taking evidence for foreign proceedings. He has been instructed as an expert witness on Hong Kong law regarding wills.

He is a former lecturer in law in trusts at Hong Kong University and a former member of the Inland Revenue Board of Review.
